Swimmer of Meet

Leicester Penguins Open Meet
6th/7th October, 2007

I was really pleased with the standard of swimming at Leicester; most swimmers achieved PB's and this only one month back into the season.

We have been to Sheffield in the past and it has been expensive for parents especially if the swimmers are not back to their best.

I also want to ease back on competitions as swimmers were blowing out at the end of the season.
So although we just did Downham last year, I felt that this was not enough for our top swimmers.
Leicester was a good choice with the chance to gain Midland short course times and I intend for us to go again next year.

With so many good swims and PB's thank you for making my job of picking a swimmer of the meet so hard to do!

Michael Craven won the 50m Backstroke and had another good swim in the 100m Backstroke in a new PB of 1.22.65.  Although Michael will still be 12 years old at the counties, I told him that I wanted to see him achieve a 13 year old time and he has already achieved that goal, well done.

Rebecca Craven and Susannah Yeilding both produced PB's and enjoyed racing each other.

Kimberley Van Haren went straight back to her winning ways in the 200m Butterfly, 200m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly.  With 5 PB's, Kimberley was definitely on form to be considered for swimmer of the meet.  I felt that there was a bit of spark missing however, and feel that Kimberley needs to do more training to maintain the level that she swims at.

It was nice to see Laura Swain back swimming PB's after a dreadful season last year.   Ben Pogson also gained his first 100m Backstroke PB for a year and is well on his way to the Olympic trials.  Ben won the 50m and 100m Backstroke, 50m and 100m Freestyle and the 100m Individual Medley and broke two county records.  He swam a total of 6 PB's because of a different attitude in training -  and just in the nick of time.

Patrick Ikhena made the winning rostrum his and gained a Midland short course time in the 100m Butterfly.  Patrick won the 100m Butterfly, 100m Individual Medley, 50m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke with 3 PB's.

Oliver Street, who has started morning training and always lived in Reuben's  shadow, stood up to be counted by winning the 200m Butterfly, beating Reuben into second place.  Hopefully this will give Reuben a wake up call! Oliver swam 5 PB,s in all.

My Swimmer of the Meet is going to be Ikhuemose Ikhena, winner of the 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle and he also achieved a Personal Best time in every event he swam.

Well Done,

Ian
