A prestigious event in the swimming calendar is the National Championships held at Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Pool, and Boston Amateur Swimming Club were represented by Ben Pogson and Patrick Ikhena. Patrick had two events, the 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly. In the freestyle event Patrick swam a time of 1.02.15, a long course best time and finished in 31st place. In the 100m Butterfly Patrick swam 1.10.44 another long course PB and finished 27th place in the 13 year age group. Patrick has now been selected for the Midland Talent swimmers training camps next season. Ben Pogson swimming in the 100m Backstroke also managed a long course best time of 1.03.60 and when converted back to short course is just 3/10th of a second off his all time best. Ben finished in 13th place in the 15 year age group and is my Swimmer of the Meet. Ben is already on the Talent pathway for the Midlands and is sure to be invited back after his performance. It is important for swimmers to gain long course PB's and the first aim is to beat that time. The next aim is to try and beat your long course time by enough to convert to a short course PB and finally the best of all is to beat your short course time in a long course pool! Well done lads, Ian |
